Internet and the World Wide Web

Hi everyone,

These are the slides my group has created which is on netiquette .

Collaborative Group Presentation (Group 7  No.31-33)
https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1ppqFyzkaJwP80BnRsY121HW4f5Z3Jx4RCpvzuc6uO-g/edit#slide=id.p26

Netiquette is a portmanteau of net and etiquette. It basically means manners on the web. Netiquette is very important because it reflects your character and also gives other users of the web a first impression of yourself. In a worst-case scenario, not following the rules of netiquette can cause you to be arrested and punished by authority figures.

Examples of negative behaviours (not following the rules of netiquette) in the web include:

  • Shouting (typing in capital letters)
  • Using vulgarities and posting inappropriate contents on the web
  • Spamming
  • Flaming (posting hostile messages on the Internet)
  • Cyberbullying
  • Infringing others' privacy
And many more, as long as it makes users of the internet feel threatened, uncomfortable or insulted. So we must follow the rules of netiquette and make the internet a safe place for us to use.

(For the self-assessment point, I rate myself 1.)

10 Major Learning Points from the 57-slides reading material

What I have learnt from the 57-slides,

1. I have learnt that we can connect to the internet via two types of connection method: Slow-speed technology and High-speed connection. The Slow-speed technology is when the computer's modem is using a standard telephone line to connect to the internet. High-speed technology include Digital Subscriber Line, Cable Telephone Internet Services, cable modems, satellite modems and fixed wireless.

2. I have learnt the 9 basic types of Websites: Portal, News, Informational, Business/Marketing, Educational,
Entertainment, Advocacy, Blog and Personal.

3. I have learnt the graphic formats that are used on the internet: BMP, JPEG, PNG, GIF and TIFF

4. I have learnt what a thumbnail is: a small version of a larger graphic (used to improve Webpage display time).

5. I have learnt what a streaming audio is: the process of transferring audio in a continuous and even flow and this enables me to listen to music as it downloads into my computer.

6. I have learnt what virtual reality is: use of of computers to simulate real or imagined environments and it appears in 3D. It is used for games and many practical applications.

7. I have learnt what is Internet telephony: Enables users to speak to other users over the Internet using their computer.

8. I have learnt what FTP (File Transfer Protocol) is: Internet standard that allows you to upload and download files with other computers on the Internet.

9. I have learnt how an e-mail message travels from the sender to the receiver(s).

10. I have learnt how Web Publishing is carried out.

Bye, see you soon. :)
